Scholar Shannon Macaulay and the Dragon-Prince Ewan have been traveling together for a year when their blissful companionship is interrupted by a cryptic message from their friend Martin.
"Come to Westshire. Edmond needs you."
Drawn to his brother's aid, Ewan finds himself hunting an elusive monster a winged beast kidnapping young women and stealing their memories. Its latest victim is the Princess Brighid of Westshire, the very girl Edmond has recently fallen for, to the disapproval of her temperamental father, King Riley, and stoic brother, Prince Ryan.
Ewan is determined to rescue his brother's beloved, no matter what the cost. But when Ryan's eyes fall upon Shannon, the dragon realizes the cost might be greater than he is willing to pay.
Dragon Debt The Dragon and the Scholar Book 2 eBook H L Burke
When Edmond's beloved, Brighid, is snatched by a mysterious creature, Ewan, Shannon, and Martin join with Brighid's brother Ryan to rescue her.Best bits: Overall an interesting story. Strong differences between the good characters and the bad ones, mainly in the lines of being totally self-focused versus actually caring about others. Ryan is a remarkably good and kind leader, considering how violent, manipulative, and harsh his father is. There’s a lot to admire about him, even though his interactions with Ewan and Shannon left me wanting to smack Ewan for being such a noble idiot. A strong indicator of solid writing, that it got me so invested and involved!
Issues: Weird page break issues in just the first chapter. Some typos (including "shown" instead of "shone"), nothing huge. A terrible ending! The plotline of the missing girls, the monsters, and Brighid and Edmond is well resolved (though Riley's concession does seem suspiciously easy in the end, as Ryan notes)--but Ewan and Shannon's story is left at a horrible cliffhanger. Boo.

Dragon Debt The Dragon and the Scholar Book 2 eBook H L Burke Reviews
I liked this one better than the first volume, primarily because there was a huge improvement in proofing and editing so the story flowed better and was easier to read. I also like the story, a play on the Prince and the Pauper with dragons. Characters are plausible, either very bad, very good or somewhere in between and all have a purpose. The ongoing struggle between Ewen and Shannon attempting to define and clarify their relationship makes a good story, even when they behave stupidly. I don't read romances by choice, sometimes I can't avoid it if the romance is a part of another story, but this one at least isn't insulting or cheesy.
This is a great book! I accidentally read it first, not realizing it was the second in a series, but it still made sense and I was able to understand what was going on and who the characters were. I do recommend reading them in the proper order, though! I went back and read the first book as soon as I'd finished this one. You will definitely want to read the third and fourth books, as well, to get the full story. I enjoyed getting into the dragon's point of view and experiencing flight (and other aspects of dragonhood) through his perspective. The other characters were fun to get to know, too. If you enjoy fantasy adventure, I highly recommend the whole series!
The adventures of Ewen and Shannon continue in this second book in the series. A mysterious monster has been stealing away maidens and returning them with their memories completely wiped. The trouble is, Ewen's brother Edmond is courting the princess of a neighboring kingdom, when she is captured by the monster.
The missing princess's brother, Ryan, has his eye on Shannon, much to Ewen's dismay. Ewen, being a dragon, is very much torn between wanting Shannon with him, and wanting her safe and happy.
The emotional stakes ramp up from book 1 to book 2, and some metaplot gets going. It's fun to see the series develop from that first book and start to really, heh, spread its wings. I'm moving on to book 3 at once!
Clean story, good plot, minimal editing flubs, and interesting characters.
I came into this without having read the first story and was pleasantly surprised at how well it reads even without the context of the first book.

My one gripe...King Riley feels a little like a caricature to me. He's a better politician than he's given credit for, and that fact arises at the END of the book rather than being mentioned by Ryan...who should know. Brighid is also a typical spoiled princess, and I felt like her shenanigans were a little over the top even for a young girl. One would think a girl trained to be a pawn in political games would have more restraint, but I kind of let that slide as the story progressed.
In all, an intriguing book that leaves me wanting more.
I devoured this book in two days! It had all the fun, quirky characters and banter from Dragon's Curse, plus a new mystery and the beginnings of a love triangle (eep!). I enjoyed seeing Shannon and Ewan's interactions now that they've spent so much time together, and both Ewan and Edmond faced additional character-building challenges. Plus many appearances by Martin, who just might be my favorite ) I was really angry with a certain character at the end, but I have high hopes that he will redeem himself by the end of the series. I plan to start Dragon's Rival tomorrow!
I always love a good mystery and a mystery mixed with a medieval fantasy with more than a dash of romance, what more could I ask for? Besides just our heroic dragon prince, there is plenty of magic being cast and adventure. The romantic triangle adds a wonderful dynamic (though I did get irritated with Ewan being so dismissive and so willing to toss everything away all the time, without even asking Shannon her opinion at any point). Both Ryan and Ewan seemed to think they knew what was best for her. It made me cringe that for being such a progressive character that she didn’t balk more over them trying to dictate her life. Still, the plight of the dragon prince is a wonderful story to follow and I would recommend this to anyone looking for some romance with their epic fantasy.I always love a good mystery and a mystery mixed with a medieval fantasy with more than a dash of romance, what more could I ask for?
